El tub termoretràctil de PVC destaca per una major resistència mecànica i una millor rigidesa superficial comparat amb la poliolefina, cosa que facilita la protecció contra cops i rascades en bateries. Tanmateix, la poliolefina sol admetre un rang més ampli de temperatures i ofereix millor flexibilitat, de manera que l’elecció depèn de la prioritat entre robustesa i adaptabilitat tèrmica.

El tub s’ha de col·locar sobre l’objecte a aïllar i exposar-lo a una font de calor, com una pistola d’aire calent, a partir de 80 °C. Un sobreescalfament excessiu pot causar decoloració, deteriorament del PVC o fins i tot combustió. És important no superar els 105 °C per mantenir la integritat del material.

El diàmetre de 120 mm el fa adequat per a agrupacions de cel·les tipus 18650 o objectes similars en contorn. El marge de tolerància de contracció és ≥48 ±5 %, per la qual cosa admet lleugeres variacions, tot i que si l’objecte supera els 120 mm abans d’encongir-se, la cobertura serà insuficient.

No requereix manteniment actiu un cop instal·lat, però s’ha de revisar periòdicament per detectar esquerdes, talls o deformacions a causa de sobreescalfament o exposició contínua a químics agressius. La durabilitat és alta si s’utilitza dins del rang de temperatura de -40 °C a 105 °C.

El tub suporta una tensió nominal de fins a 300 V i té classe de temperatura 105 °C, complint funcions bàsiques d’aïllament. Tanmateix, no està certificat com a autoextingible ni sota normatives específiques com UL94, de manera que no substitueix recobriments ignífugs obligatoris en instal·lacions normatives.

PVC heat-shrink tubing stands out for its greater mechanical resistance and better surface rigidity compared with polyolefin, making it easier to protect batteries against knocks and scuffs. However, polyolefin usually accepts a wider temperature range and offers better flexibility, so the choice depends on whether robustness or thermal adaptability is the priority.

The tubing should be placed over the item to be insulated and exposed to a heat source, such as a hot air gun, from 80 °C upwards. Excessive overheating can cause discolouration, PVC deterioration or even combustion. It is important not to exceed 105 °C to maintain the integrity of the material.

The 120 mm diameter makes it suitable for groups of 18650 cells or similar-shaped items. The shrink tolerance is ≥48 ±5%, so it allows slight variations, although if the item exceeds 120 mm before shrinking, coverage will be insufficient.

No active maintenance is required once installed, but it should be checked periodically for cracks, cuts or deformation due to overheating or continuous exposure to aggressive chemicals. Durability is high if used within the -40 °C to 105 °C temperature range.

The tubing supports a rated voltage of up to 300 V and has a 105 °C temperature class, fulfilling basic insulation functions. However, it is not certified as self-extinguishing or under specific standards such as UL94, so it does not replace mandatory fire-retardant coverings in regulated installations.
